How MDF is CNC milled
MDF (medium density fiberboard, Medium Density Fiberboard) is a reliable, time-tested material that has gained its popularity:
- - for high strength, which is 1.8-2 times higher than that of chipboard;
- - for safety for humans - formaldehyde emissions are at the level of natural wood, which is much less than that of chipboard;
- - for its unique flexibility for a cutting tool - during the milling process of MDF, it is not chips that are formed, but dust, which is easily removed from the cutting tool;
- - for viscosity and elasticity - MDF does not crumble, chip or stick together during the milling process.
A special “radius” milling technology allows you to bend areas thinned out by a cutter and produce radius parts. Milling MDF on CNC milling machines allows you to produce parts with contours of any complexity. This property of MDF is used in the manufacture of furniture fronts for doors, kitchen furniture, etc.
When starting milling, MDF does not require any specific equipment settings. The main attention is paid to the selection of cutting tools and the number of passes. MDF material is very soft and pliable. For this reason, traces of the milling passes always remain on the edge - the fewer passes, the cleaner the edge and the less time it will take to prepare the parts for subsequent painting. MDF thicker than 22 is very rarely milled in one pass and only with large diameter cutters of 6 mm and above. Take this fact into account when preparing your layouts.
Radius
The thickness of the cutting tool (cutter), depending on the thickness of the material, can vary in the range of 2-12 mm. The CNC algorithm processes the layouts in such a way that the cutter does not enter those places where the distances between the cut lines are less than the diameter of the cutter. This primarily applies to internal corners or parts commensurate with the diameter of the cutter. They end up undercut or ignored. This effect is called radius. The difference between the lines of the layout and the trajectory of the cutter in the figure. For this reason, CNC milling is rarely used for the manufacture of miniature souvenir products. In other cases, MDF milling on CNC machines in terms of price/quality/time ratio remains uncompetitive.
