DIY smart socket. What are smart plugs? "Smart" SMS socket

Why do you need a Wi-Fi socket? Its main purpose is to control electrical appliances located in the house from a distance. The device works by connecting it via a wireless Wi-Fi network to a tablet or mobile smartphone. Smart electrical accessories are increasingly conquering the market of electrical products, so in this article we decided to talk about the operating principle, design and functions of a Wi-Fi socket.

Varieties and characteristics

The principle of operation of any type of wi-fi outlet is absolutely the same. As for the design, it is divided into two types: overhead and built-in. The invoice looks like an adapter, which has one connector. The design of the device consists of the following elements: the case itself, an indicator, a button with which to turn the device on or off, and a wi-fi module. The second option is a plug-in module. Its purpose is to replace an ordinary electrical point. The photo below shows both versions:

The principle of operation of the two types is that, thanks to the microprocessor located inside the device, a connection is made with a control mechanism that regulates switching on or off. But you may also come across more complex models, which are produced in the form of a surge protector, which has several connectors.

In addition, there are models that include additional sensors that can be used to detect gas leaks, smoke or water leaks, as well as motion and temperature sensors.

Each Wi-Fi outlet, depending on the manufacturer and model, has special technical characteristics. Manufacturing companies constantly strive to improve their development and regularly introduce their additions and innovations to it. The main differences are:

  • originality in the design of the device and its packaging;
  • quality of the material used;
  • elements from which the product is made.

A Wi-Fi socket of any model consists of a housing made of heat-resistant plastic and various elements that fill this housing. The use of non-flammable materials helps protect people from the release of harmful halogens. The heat resistance of the material is 748 degrees Celsius. Thanks to this, manufacturing companies guarantee the safety of using Wi-Fi equipment.

Main functions

The purpose and scope of application of the Wi-Fi socket is described in the following functions:

  • turning on and off household appliances from a distance;
  • thanks to the temperature sensor, the fire safety of the house is ensured;
  • it is possible to monitor and find out the electricity readings consumed by electrical appliances powered by this device;
  • if necessary, you can reboot the equipment;
  • monitoring children thanks to the presence of a timer that turns off the TV or lights after a certain time.

Terms of use

A Wi-Fi socket, as a rule, operates in the operating voltage range of 100 – 240 V (meaning use in home or office environments). The output power has its own range, which ranges from 2 to 4 kW. Thanks to this, it is possible to connect devices with large short-term loads. For example, a heater, electric kettle or food processor.

Despite the fact that all manufacturers create their own individual instructions for using the device, the principle of operation and their purpose are almost the same. The difference lies only in the additional configuration of certain parameters and functions that the wi-fi outlet has.

First you need to install a special application on your smartphone or tablet. Then check if you have a connection to your home wireless Internet. There is a QR code on the box or in the device instructions that allows you to access the software you need to download.

After this, you need to find an option in the program that will search for a new Wi-Fi connection. A window will appear opposite the required wireless network, in which you must enter a password to connect. After confirming the password, the wi-fi socket is connected to a 220V network and turned on by pressing the on/off button. The LED indicator will indicate that the Wi-Fi socket is ready for further operation.

After all the settings have been made and the required functions have been installed, you can connect any household appliance to the connectors and carry out individual settings for it. How to do this correctly is indicated in the instructions. If there is a need to reset all settings to factory settings, then just press the on/off button of the device for six seconds and the socket will return to its original position in which it was released from production.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage is that thanks to such a smart device you can control electrical appliances from a distance. The disadvantages include the following:

  1. If the power goes out, all settings are reset and must be set again.
  2. There are models that are not compatible with the router. To fix this, you need to call a specialist, since only his experience and knowledge will help correct the situation.
  3. The Wi-Fi outlet has its own time zone, which may not coincide with the real one. This is due to the fact that the device is set to the time zone that the manufacturing company has. This leads to self-adjustment of the system.
  4. If an emergency failure occurs in the electrical network, the devices are automatically turned off.
  5. Changing the operation and functions of the device is possible only if there is one wireless network. If they are different, it will lead to negative results.
  6. If there is no Internet connection, the device will not connect at the time specified in the settings. This is explained by the fact that all settings and changes are saved on servers that do not work without the Internet. But there is no special microchip that will include a memory block.

Modern intelligent systems provide comfort and reliably protect against unexpected situations. One of the elements of such systems are smart sockets.

In this article we will consider only important and interesting questions:

  • What are the features of the smart home concept?
  • What is a smart plug, how is it useful, and how does it work?
  • How to control the device, and what elements does it consist of?
  • What types of smart plugs are there, and what are their features?
  • How to choose and connect their different types correctly?

What does the concept of a smart home mean?

The intelligent “Smart Home” system is not new to the modern technology market for a long time. Its peculiarity lies in the automation of processes inside an apartment or house. Of course, there are still many discoveries ahead, but much of what was planned has been implemented and is already working successfully today.

The “Smart Home” system integrates all the electrics of the home, which allows the owner to control various equipment, be it air conditioning, TV, security system devices and much more.

An integral element of a modern home is a smart socket - a device designed in one of the scientific institutes in Germany.

The electrical equipment of a house or apartment connected to it becomes under the control of the owner. The user can control the device while sitting on his favorite chair or being thousands of kilometers away from home.

But in Italy they developed their own solution on the platform. The system is open source, which means it is more flexible in terms of designing electronic devices.

Partially related to this smart home concept are:

How smart plugs work

The first smart plugs were controlled only by sending SMS messages or making a call from a mobile phone. A GPS module and a SIM card were installed inside the product.

In addition, to control the device, a special application was installed on the smartphone, which allows you to interact with smart sockets and electrical equipment connected to them.

Nowadays, more modern devices are controlled via the Internet, and some models additionally include a USB adapter that connects to the router and monitors commands sent from a computer or phone. Signals are sent to the hardware of the device, after which they are transmitted to the equipment.

The average distance at which external commands are received is about 30 meters. Each product has an individual IP address, which ensures the security and encryption of transmitted information.

Thus, a smart plug consists of two main elements:

  • A controller that receives external signals and then transmits them to an electromagnetic relay.
  • A relay is a device that, after receiving a signal from the controller, closes or opens a circuit.

The signal is supplied to the smart socket in one of the following ways:

  • Through the Internet;
  • By call;
  • By sending an SMS message.

Why a smart plug is useful and its functions

Initially, smart sockets were developed for private homes with a local area that needed regular maintenance. It's easy to explain.

Home owners need to turn on watering plants, additional lighting or electrical equipment from time to time. It is not always possible to come home to solve the assigned tasks. What can we say about the need to open the gate in cold weather.

In such cases, “smart” equipment is actively used to provide additional comfort.

In relation to our everyday life, the benefits of smart sockets are irreplaceable:

  • The ability to remotely turn on the kettle or coffee maker while lying on your bed in the morning. The few minutes freed up can be used to solve other problems.
  • Programming sockets to turn on an electrical appliance at a certain time.
  • Turning on the heating devices shortly before the owner arrives from work, if the home remains empty during this period. This approach saves energy.

Smart sockets are reliable assistants for absent-minded people who constantly forget to turn off this or that device.

Now there is no need to return home to make sure the iron is turned off. Just go to a special application on your phone or send an SMS message to a specific number.

Special sockets allow you to automate the operation of home equipment - computers, routers, TV, security systems. In addition, the use of such products is an opportunity to protect a house or apartment from the penetration of strangers.

By sending a short message or pressing a button in the application, you can turn on the lights in the apartment, a stereo system or other electrical appliances that will indicate that a person is in the apartment.

Thus, the functions of a smart plug include:

  • Obtaining remote access to control (turn on and off) household appliances - air conditioners, convectors, ovens and other appliances.
  • Control of temperature, gas pollution, humidity and other important parameters in the apartment.
  • Notifying the owner about a power outage, as well as a loss of power to electrical equipment. Thanks to this feature, it is possible to quickly identify and repair damage.
  • Reboot office equipment as needed or scheduled. The capabilities of a smart socket allow you to program the device for various modes.
  • Energy consumption measurement.

Control

The control process is simple and accessible even to a novice user. All that is required is a connected Internet or mobile connection.

The principle of controlling a GSM socket is as follows:

  • Removing the product from the box, installing a SIM card from any operator.
  • Connecting the device to a household voltage of 220 Volts in the home network.
  • Plug one or more controlled devices into a smart socket.

To control the device via a smartphone, you need to enter the smart device number in the book with phone numbers. It is advisable to save basic SMS commands in your mobile phone and use them when necessary.

They can be sent not only by SMS message, but also using a special application on Android or iOS.

The smart socket receives commands at a distance of up to five numbers, which is additional protection against outside interference or malfunctions. In addition, only those telephones from which you plan to control the device can be added to the list of numbers.

If your apartment or house has an outlet that can operate via the Internet, the control principles are even simpler.

To issue a command, just install a special application or go to a web page from your computer and see the real state of the device - disabled or enabled.

In addition, parameters such as a graph of changes in temperature and humidity are saved in the user’s personal account.

Device Features

The main feature of smart sockets is the fact that they fit the connectors of most modern equipment. It is worth considering that the power limit is 3 kW. This is usually enough to connect a powerful receiver, such as a heating radiator, boiler or.

There are many options for smart plugs. The simplest ones include products that have a single connector, and the more advanced ones include several sockets (up to 3-4), made in the form of a surge protector.

In addition, it is possible to combine a group of sockets into one network for interaction between them via radio communication.

Turning off the power does not lead to malfunctions of the smart socket, because it has a backup power source inside. It is enough to send an SMS message and warn the owner about a decrease or shutdown of voltage.

If the device is capable of operating via the Internet, an “alarm” letter with information about a loss of power is sent to the owner’s mailbox.

If an apartment or house has a security system, it also continues to work for a certain time.

New versions of smart sockets provide a timer that allows you to set the operating time of a specific device or program it to turn on or off.

As an additional function, a special thermometer may be provided to monitor the temperature.

Types of devices

With the growing popularity of smart plugs, the pure offers that are available to customers have also increased.

It is difficult for a novice user to decide on a suitable design, because they all differ in the installation method and control option. Let us consider the main types of products in detail.

According to the type of installation, smart sockets are:

According to the control method, smart sockets are:

  • With SMS control;
  • Radio controlled;
  • With the ability to submit commands over the Internet.

Based on design features, they are divided into types:

  • Single devices - with remote control.
  • One socket with several control outputs. Each of them is capable of receiving commands to turn the device on or off.
  • Several sockets, where one of them serves as the main one, and the others depend on it, while the main one can control a group of other sockets.
  • Extension cord (surge protector). The peculiarity of the product is that commands are sent simultaneously to all outputs or for each separately.

Invoices - pros and cons

The advantages of smart surface-type sockets include:

  • Wide selection of models. You can choose a device that suits the design and type of control. Modern models are controlled via telephone or Internet.
  • Easy installation without complex installation work.
  • Easy to set up, even a novice user can handle it.

Flaws:

  • During operation, there may be interruptions in communication due to poor quality of the GSM signal. Within the city, problems rarely arise, but outside the territory of a populated area, communication interruptions may occur. This is confirmed by reviews of people who use such products in everyday life.
  • The ability to control a smart plug depends on the availability of telephone and/or Internet charges. These points are important to take into account.
  • Bulkyness is not always a plus for the appearance of the interior.

Built-in smart sockets

Built-in products are mounted into the wall according to the same principle as conventional sockets. When choosing, the buyer has two options - redo the wiring or leave everything as it was.

In the first case, the specialist plans the placement of devices that are installed in certain parts of the house or apartment, after which the wiring is done, and further control occurs using an SMS controller.

The second option is to leave the wiring unchanged. In this case, the SMS controller is mounted on an electrical panel, which eliminates the possibility of controlling only one outlet.

For example, a user will not be able to turn off the router without turning off a table lamp installed in the same room. This is due to the fact that several outlets are usually included in one group.

SMS, GSM sockets without and with temperature sensor

Smart GSM sockets are special products that can be controlled using a mobile phone. For their full operation, several components are required - a phone with a working SIM card, the smart socket itself, as well as another card for SMS messages.

On the back of the device there is a special connector into which a SIM card is installed.

On the other hand, there is a connector into which electrical appliances are connected. The presence of power can be judged by a special indicator.

GSM sockets can be controlled remotely; the main condition is the presence of a stable cellular network in the place where it is installed.

Some models send a message to the owner when a power outage occurs or in the event of a power outage. Such outlets can be controlled using a special application. It must be downloaded and installed on your smartphone or tablet.

Depending on the model, the list of device features and capabilities may vary. For example, some models are equipped with a temperature sensor, door opening or humidity indicator.

More modern devices have the ability to program - turn the device on and off at a certain time (day, week).

Control is carried out using a customizable timer and an external microphone.

Advanced GSM sockets have their own battery, which ensures operation for 12 hours even when the electricity is turned off, informing the owner about what happened.

  • Carefully read the instructions that come with the remote-controlled smart socket.
  • Install the SIM card into the appropriate slot.
  • Insert the product into a fixed outlet to which the equipment will be connected.
  • This completes the connection.

Now you need to configure the equipment for correct operation in the future. Start by checking the functionality of the module, for which pay attention to the special indicator - it should light up.

Now you need to “bind” the SIM card number to the product, following the instructions included in the kit.

Programming principles may differ depending on the specific model. Here, a lot depends on the manufacturer, as well as the type of smart socket.

To set all parameters correctly, carefully read the operating instructions. Please remember that the setup of products from different manufacturers varies.

When installing and operating GSM smart sockets, you should consider the following rules:

  • Do not exceed the maximum permissible load specified by the manufacturer.
  • Do not connect sockets of this type outdoors, near a sink or stove; high temperature, dust and moisture can negatively affect their operation.
  • When programming numbers, remember that their number is individual for different models. Some devices provide protection against mailings or calls from other numbers.
  • Consider the minimum and maximum distances between devices during installation.
  • Having good GSM coverage is a prerequisite for stable operation of the device.

This is enough for both devices to “find” each other and connect via an available radio channel.

If the work is completed successfully, this can be seen by the indicator light (located on the body) lighting up. Afterwards you can use the device.

How to choose a smart plug?

The issue of choosing smart sockets deserves special attention. Here it is worth paying attention to the following aspects:

  1. Control methods;
  2. Supported maximum power;
  3. Plug standard;
  4. Connection type;
  5. Functionality.

Control method

Smart plugs can be controlled through:

  • Remote control;
  • Android application
  • Application on iOS.
  • Remote access.

Smart plugs with remote control are suitable for use within the home, but they cannot be controlled from a long distance. In this case, it is better to buy an analogue, in which a special GSM module with an operator SIM card is installed.

Such devices can be remotely controlled using a telephone. The main condition for stable operation of GSM sockets is the presence of a stable signal.

Recently, several more types of devices have been gaining popularity - those controlled via Wi-Fi (turned on and off using a special application) and Z-Wave sockets.

The latter are based on special chips that are compatible with each other and provide the ability to remotely control the device.

Buying smart Z-Wave sockets is relevant when you need to install many devices, because in combination with these devices you will have to buy a controller, which increases costs.

It is worth noting smart sockets made using Zigbee technology. They operate at 2.4 GHz and are very similar to Z-Wave systems.

Such models are distinguished by their versatility and complexity of technology, so buying a separate device without plans for further expansion of the smart home system is impractical.

Maximum power

This is one of the main parameters that you should pay attention to when choosing. The principle is simple - the total power of connected devices should not exceed the limit set by the manufacturer.

Connection type

Here the principle is identical for everyone. The difference is that some models have a universal connector with the ability to connect any equipment.

Functionality

Smart plugs can have many additional features that you need to look for when choosing them. Here are just a few of them:

Special attention should be paid to the features of application. If necessary, it is better to choose models with moisture and dust protection. Such devices have special curtains, which are useful from a safety point of view for children.

Main manufacturers

Smart plugs are produced by companies such as Belkin, Everspring, Nodon, TP-Link, Fibaro, Broadlink, Lifesos, Tecsar Alert. Manufacturers such as Redmond and Xiaomi are no less popular in our country.

It is worth noting that most models come from China, but this does not affect the quality. Modern devices are reliable, easy to use and have a long service life.

What to look for when choosing a GSM socket?

When choosing a GSM socket, you should decide where the device will be used and the devices with what load will be connected to it.

If you plan to install the product in a room without heating, it is better to buy Russian-made models that can perform their functions even in the cold. In terms of load, almost all models have a limit of 3.5 kW. This parameter must not be exceeded.

When choosing, it is worth considering the presence of additional options, such as the ability to measure temperature, turn on/off by timer, control via phone (using an application), and so on.

The more options the manufacturer provides, the higher the cost of the product. So it is recommended to immediately decide which functions are necessary and which ones you can do without.

By the way, the ability to measure temperature is very useful. In addition, installing a separate temperature sensor will cost more.

Z-Wave technology

Smart sockets with Z-Wave technology provide remote control of any equipment in the house. Such devices can be turned on and off, the brightness and volume of connected devices can be changed, and other tasks can be solved.

Z-Wave is based on a special mesh technology in which devices can act as signal transmitters and receivers.

The result is a network with routing and the ability to automatically reconfigure taking into account external operating conditions. If there is an obstacle on the way, the signal overcomes it and finds the shortest path to the device.

The features of Z-Wave smart sockets include economical energy consumption and the absence of radio frequency interference.

By the way, the frequency range of the devices is up to 1 GHz. Z-Wave products are based on special chips that are highly compatible with each other.

The main models of such devices include NodOn Z-Wave Plus, Fibaro Wall Plug FGWPF-101, Everspring EVR_AN1572 and LifeSOS XSW-01.

Zigbee technology

Smart Zigbee sockets, which are based on new technology, deserve special attention. It is similar in principle to the Z-Wave described above.

The technology involves the use of a mesh structure, scalability and the ability to expand the network with new devices.

Devices made using Zigbee technology operate, like a Wi-Fi network, at a frequency of 2.4 GHz. But there is a difference here - the possibility of using different channels.

The features include the versatility and complexity of construction, so it makes no sense to use any one device in the house that works on this principle.

Today, such a socket on the Zigbee Xiaomi Mi Smart is popular. Its peculiarity is the ability to control the boiler, which adds additional convenience.

How to assemble a smart socket with your own hands?

Interestingly, it’s possible to assemble a smart socket with your own hands. To do this, you need to have minimal skills, tools and a certain amount to purchase components.

Basic knowledge of programming and electrical components is also required.

To make a smart socket with your own hands, you will need an external socket, a Wi-Fi module, a power supply unit with a stabilizer (U-3.3 V), a soldering iron and a solid-state relay.

It is worth noting that if you do not have the skills for such work, it is better to buy a new device.

Watch the video for one way to implement the idea.

Smart sockets and switches, as well as other devices that are components of a smart home, bring additional comfort to our lives and increase the safety of using various electrical appliances.

They can be installed at work and at home, they are easy to connect and configure, have an affordable price and are available in a wide range.

The main thing is to carefully approach the choice of such devices. It is important to remember that the quality and reliability of their operation largely depends on the stability of the GSM or Wi-Fi network (depending on the model).

Smart plug – what is it and what is it for? Why do you need Wi-Fi in a socket at all? How does everything connect and work? I decided to talk about all this in this short article. We will also try to find out whether it is worth buying a smart socket, and what benefits it can have.

Let me start with the fact that Wi-Fi is now being pushed everywhere possible: washing machines, TVs, kettles, multicookers, and even light bulbs. We've already reached the sockets. The concept itself, like the “Smart socket” device, appeared not so long ago. But now many manufacturers have released several models of such sockets. And these sockets are even selling a little.

Let's first find out what kind of device this is. I'll explain in simple words.

- a device that plugs into a regular outlet (if this is a cover socket, there are simply built-in ones), and other electrical appliances are already connected to it. Like a simple adapter. The socket connects to the home Wi-Fi network. Through a special application for a smartphone or tablet, you can control the outlet. From a distance, turn it off and on (even via the Internet, far from home). Turn on/off by timer, operation statistics, and even view statistics of electricity consumption of the connected device (only on some models). The functionality depends on the manufacturer and model of the device.

I have experience in setting up and using only smart plugs from TP-Link. This manufacturer has two models: HS100 and HS110. I have already written about them in more detail in separate articles:

There are also other manufacturers. For example, Xiaomi has Mi Smart socket. There is REDMOND SKYPLUG 100S. I'm not even talking about some Chinese, nameless models.

What tasks can a smart plug be used for?

To be honest, I don’t use my outlet. I have the HS110 pictured above. I set it up, played with it for a couple of days and that’s it. I never found a use for it.

But if you think about it, you can find many different options where you can use a Wi-Fi outlet. For example:

  • Turn lights off and on. For example, in a children's room.
  • Before arriving home, you can turn on the heater or some other device.
  • Set up a schedule for a specific device.
  • When you go on vacation, you can turn on the lights remotely. It's like you're at home.
  • And of course, connect the iron through the smart socket and not think about whether you forgot to turn it off. Since you can always check this from your smartphone.

You can come up with many options. It is clear that each user will have their own use.

How do you feel about all these smart sockets, etc. For what purposes do you use, or would you like to use, these devices? Write in the comments.

Modern technologies amaze the imagination, making everyday life much easier. A truly innovative device is a smart socket that allows you to turn on the kettle from a distance and program the boiler to turn on for a certain time. With its help, it is possible to eliminate a number of standard daily actions, and spend the saved time on serious and important matters.

Device Description

The very first smart devices with remote control were developed for private households - where daily care and attention to local areas, flower beds and other plantings is constantly vital. After all, at a certain time it is necessary to water the plants, turn on additional lighting and a number of more complex manipulations. The ability to quickly come home and press the right button does not always exist.

I especially don’t want to get out of a warm car on a chilly autumn or winter day and open the garage door. Modern gadgets have come to the rescue, one of which is smart sockets. This is an original device that is connected to a regular outlet, and then a number of necessary electrical appliances are connected to it. In other words, such a device acts as an adapter.

You can control such a device in different ways:

  • via radio control;
  • SMS messages (mobile communications);
  • Internet connection;
  • Wi-Fi network.

Additionally, you will need a specific application for your phone, computer, tablet, thanks to which you can turn off (turn on) the outlet at almost any distance from the house. You can set a timer, view operation statistics and electricity consumption. Additional features that your device may have vary depending on the model and manufacturer.

Important! Several family members can use such a device, and not just one person. Access to it is allowed for up to 5 people, although only one will be assigned the maximum set of functionality.

Externally, smart sockets are practically indistinguishable from ordinary ones. The latest models are characterized by an attractive appearance and the ability to successfully fit into any interior. If necessary, you can group several devices at once and configure them for a specific job.

Scope of application of intelligent devices

Options for using smart appliances are limited only by the buyer's needs and imagination. You can connect any devices to them, using them as a regular outlet. The only limitation is power: these devices are designed for a total power of 3.5 kW, which corresponds to a simple outlet, a connected air conditioner and a boiler of average energy consumption.

The main category of buyers choosing smart devices are owners of country houses and summer cottages. Safety in the areas is important to them. It is always comfortable to arrive to a pre-heated house. Apartment owners who like to come into a house with the air conditioner already on in the hot summer also buy devices.

Smart sockets are also good for forgetful people who cannot remember whether the iron is turned off or not. Even if the device remains turned on, turning it off will not be a problem.

Devices are often used to reboot equipment that has software. They are used for irrigation systems in the country, heating the house at inexpensive rates at night, and even as alarm clocks.

Many people use them as automatic lighting, video cameras, water and gas leakage sensors. Sometimes this is a door indicator, thermostat and alarm.

The scope of application of smart plugs is extensive. Modern manufacturers are ready to provide a wide range of models with a lot of functionality.

Types and main differences of devices

When faced with smart sockets for the first time, most buyers are perplexed. This is understandable, since practical manufacturers offer a wide variety of models that differ in appearance and functionality.

All sockets can be divided into 2 categories.

Invoices

Represented by the adapter sockets described above. The demand for them grows every year. They do not require professional knowledge or special skills to use. After purchasing, you need to proceed to several steps:

  • unpack the device;
  • connect to an outlet;
  • configure a list of specific parameters;
  • connect devices.

When you need to use the device in another room, you need to turn it off and move it.

Wall mounted

To install sockets, you will need to carry out a full renovation, so you need to distribute the location of the devices. You need to decide in what capacity smart sockets will act and what tasks they will solve. The issue of power consumption needs to be addressed.

Smart sockets are also divided by type of control:

  • radio-controlled: represented by models with remote control, respond to commands coming from a distance of up to 30 m;
  • controlled using mobile messages: to activate the work, just send an SMS to the device;
  • Internet devices: provide the ability to control devices at home from anywhere in the world.

There is also a division based on design features:

  • independent models (single), with remote control;
  • a single socket equipped with several control outputs, each of which is capable of receiving separate commands to turn off or turn on the device connected through it;
  • a whole group of devices, among which there is one main outlet that controls the operation of the others;
  • gsm socket that receives commands for all outputs at once or for each separately.

To understand the advantages of the listed categories, it is worthwhile to look at each separately and understand how everything works.

The principle of operation of different types of sockets

A detailed review of individual categories of smart devices can help you decide on a model.

Radio controlled

They consist directly of a single socket (a whole set of devices) with a remote control. To connect the device to work, you should install the device in a stationary outlet, connect a computer, a kettle. On the outer body of the device there is a button in the form of an indicator that shows whether the device is working.

Additionally, it is equipped with buttons that allow you to control the device in the absence of a remote control. Radio-controlled models of sockets usually operate at a frequency from 315 to 433 MHz, and the operating range on average is no more than 30 or 40 m. Detailed information will be reflected in the attached instructions.

GSM sockets

They assume control using a regular mobile phone. For full operation, you will need 2 SIM cards, one of which will be in the phone, the second in the outlet. For this purpose, the device has a special socket. To get started, simply connect the device with the SIM card to the power supply.

The start of work will be signaled by illuminated indicators indicating the connection to the network, the receipt of signals and the supply of electricity. Then you need to connect electrical appliances to the device. For direct control, it is enough to send a message with the appropriate command. It is possible to control via applications on a tablet or smartphone.

Important! Sockets are also available with a temperature sensor, which allows you to regulate the temperature using a convector. There is also a humidity indicator with a door opening sensor. Some models have batteries for uninterrupted operation during a power outage and are capable of sending messages about a failure.

Wi-Fi outlets

Internet-based devices are in demand. Such models are popular because they have a number of additional functions:

  • may have a built-in video camera;
  • equipped with motion indicators;
  • capable of measuring humidity and temperature;
  • may have built-in timers.

These sockets consist of a button for turning on and off, have an LED indicator and mandatory grounding. Some models are equipped with a spare battery pack that turns on during a power outage.

The operating principle of the devices is based on a Wi-Fi network, with which they connect and receive their IP address. A computer, laptop, phone, tablet, smartphone with an installed application is suitable for controlling the device.

The final choice of model depends on users having preferences and goals for installing smart devices.

Basic functions of sockets

Before directly purchasing smart sockets, you should decide what they are needed for.

These devices perform several functions:

  • turning on/off lighting (convenient in children's rooms);
  • turning on heating appliances, boiler, kettle in advance before immediately coming home from work;
  • remote control of the irrigation system when going on vacation or weekends;
  • fire protection, thanks to additional equipment for detecting temperature changes, gas contamination or increased humidity;
  • notification of emergency power outage;
  • rebooting office equipment with programming for a different operating mode;
  • regulation of electricity consumption.

An important function of the device is to turn the iron on and off from a distance: you don’t have to rack your brains and feel fear from the obsessive thought of whether the iron is turned off.

Smart devices are capable of issuing an alarm signal when the load on the power grid increases to the maximum permissible level. Some models can automatically turn off faulty electrical appliances and then turn them off. They can also send SMS (or write an email).

Smart plug control

Managing smart devices is simple. The main thing is to establish a reliable connection via the Internet and mobile communications.

The following is the control of GSM socket:

  • remove the device from the packaging;
  • insert a mobile operator SIM card;
  • plug in the power outlet (220 V);
  • connect devices to the device.
  • Enter the outlet number into your phone.

For outlets operating via the Internet, the algorithm is simpler. You need to install the application, go online and monitor the condition of household appliances in a mode where all temperature graphs, humidity indicators and other data are stored throughout the year in your personal account.

Making your own smart sockets

Craftsmen claim that you can make one or more reasonable sockets with your own hands. But this will require certain skills and tools, a certain amount of money for specific components. You can’t do without knowledge in the field of programming and electrical engineering.

For example, for the simplest model of this device you will need:

  • external socket;
  • Wi-Fi module;
  • power supply with voltage stabilizer (3.3 V);
  • solid state relay;
  • soldering iron along with consumables.

But these are only the main components. Other components will also be required, a specific working scheme according to which it will be necessary to manufacture a smart device. Of course, no one bothers you to try your hand, but without the necessary skills it is better not to do this in order to avoid unnecessary waste of time and money.

You should simplify your task and buy one of the smart devices in a specialized store. In this case, it will be quite simple to decide what the outlet is needed for and what functions the device will need to have. The sellers will take care of the rest.

Smart sockets are becoming more and more common in homes today, making the lives of their owners much easier. It is possible to connect several devices to such a device at once and control them remotely.

There is nothing complicated or incomprehensible about smart plugs; modern children can easily understand their operation. Few people will refuse such an original device that can increase comfort and quality of life several times.

And so, this guide is offered to everyone who wants to make a “smart” outlet with solitaire and professional networks! Features of this product: the socket will be built-in, controlled both via wi-fi and via the Internet. You can also see the status of the outlet. And if you are not too lazy, then with temperature sensors, light sensors, a video camera and anything else you want later!

It is necessary to check the functionality of the circuit itself. Essentially, it’s a WeMo Switch emulator, the difference is that ours will fit into any outlet and fit perfectly into the interior.

What do we need to implement our plans:
1. In order to control the operation of the outlet via Wi-Fi, we will need a controller module with WiFi.
2. Relay 16A 220V.
3. Power supply for these two modules with a voltage of 5 V
4. And of course the socket box, where would we be without it?
5. And even more so, you can’t do without the outlet itself!
6. It would also be nice to make an LED for on/off indexing.
Here are all the components:

Solder the wires to the structure:

We insulate the wires and contacts:

Then we place all this in the socket box and connect it to the socket itself.

As for software, programming skills are required. If you have these, then it is recommended to use a lightweight web server and the simplest bash scripts, although it is quite possible to install a minimal Python assembly for our purposes.
Otherwise, you should look for a solution to the problem on the forums or copy the software of the official version of this outlet. You can find a large variety of them both on websites dedicated to programming and simply as part of online stores.
We check for functionality. And so the relay, LED and socket voltage are normal. Well, the first step has been taken towards the ideal outlet. The cost of all components can be estimated at approximately 1,500 rubles.

And most importantly, don’t be afraid to experiment, there’s nothing complicated here, take a soldering iron with a thin tip and go!

Perhaps your hands will shake, but this is only the first five minutes, once you get used to it initially, you will already be confident and steadfast as granite.

Important Note:
The socket is usually located closer to the floor (from physics lessons you should remember that hot air goes up, and cold air goes down), so the thermostat indicators will not be entirely correct - this is worth taking into account if you rely on them to regulate the heating.
