What is most important when choosing a vacuum cleaner? How to choose a good household vacuum cleaner for your home

Cleaning has become synonymous with the word “duty,” but you want to clean with pleasure and inspiration? Maybe it's time to buy a new modern vacuum cleaner?

Why are canister vacuum cleaners popular?

First, let's look at the advantages of vacuum cleaners with containers - it is among them that we will select the 10 best models. It's simple - replaceable dust collectors don't last long. The “life” of textile bags is limited, although they are positioned as permanent. In addition, they do not provide the proper level of filtration, and the dust removal process cannot be called comfortable. It’s easier with paper bags, but you need a constant supply of them (and this is an additional expense).
Whether it's a plastic container. And the plus is not only in the convenience of cleansing. What matters is cyclone technology, which in itself is already an effective filter that separates dust from the air.
Of course, there are still shortcomings. For example, an increased noise level and an increase in the size of the vacuum cleaner compared to “bag” vacuum cleaners of the same power. It’s just that convenience and ease of care are becoming more significant factors for consumers. Our rating includes the best bagless vacuum cleaners of early 2019, based on reviews from experts and ordinary customers.

It is impossible to keep your apartment clean without a vacuum cleaner. Many of us do not attach much importance to the selection of this much-needed household appliance. But in vain, after all the vacuum cleaner is selected for a sufficiently long period of time, therefore it must fully comply with the apartment and personal requirements, otherwise cleaning with its help will be difficult, and achieving the desired results is almost impossible. That is why before purchasing it is worth understanding how to choose a vacuum cleaner for an apartment, and what parameters this device should have. You will receive answers to all questions below.

When deciding which vacuum cleaner to choose, First of all, you need to decide on the type of dust collector– this is one of the most basic parameters of a vacuum cleaner. Depending on the dust collector, all vacuum cleaners are divided into three groups:

  • vacuum cleaners with bags;
  • vacuum cleaners with containers;
  • vacuum cleaners with aquafilter.

Washing vacuum cleaners are included in a separate group, which will be discussed below.

Vacuum cleaners with dust bags

This most affordable devices, so their popularity is still very high, despite the emergence of more thoughtful designs. The operating principle is simple: the electric motor starts the fan, which creates a rarefied atmosphere, causing dust to enter the bag through the brush and pipe. Passing through the filters, the air is purified and comes out completely clean. As the dust container fills up, the cleaning efficiency decreases.

Bags can be of two types:

  • paper;
  • fabric.

Paper bags disposable. When such a bag is full, you can simply throw it away - quickly and easily. On the other hand, you will have to buy paper bags from time to time, and this is an additional waste.

Fabric bags Can be shaken out and used again and again. This makes the cleaning process cheaper, but when you empty the bag you will have to breathe in dust, which is not very pleasant, and is generally contraindicated for allergy sufferers.

Vacuum cleaners with containers

Many people prefer to choose bagless vacuum cleaners, because in them When the dust container is full, suction efficiency does not decrease. Such devices use cyclone type system, which was once developed by John Dyson. In simple words the working principle is as follows: the drawn air enters a cone-shaped tank, where it moves in a spiral, and the dust is pressed against the walls of the container and freely falls down. Vacuum cleaners operating on the principle of double cyclone, which are equipped with an additional external cyclone, where the air is cleaned of larger dust particles, and then enters the main cyclone. You can also find models that use more than two cyclones.

The main disadvantage of such a system– when shaking out the container, contact with dust is inevitable. Previously, such vacuum cleaners were not distinguished by the most effective air filtration, but today, thanks to HEPA-filters Air purification reaches 99.99%. When using a vacuum cleaner like this, it is very important to prevent the cyclone from breaking, which can happen when a carpet, rug or other object gets stuck to the brush. The main advantage is the same high performance regardless of how full the container is. Definitely say Which vacuum cleaner is better to choose, with a bag or a container?, difficult, but the latter are in higher demand today.

Vacuum cleaners with aqua filter

Vacuum cleaners with an aqua filter provide high degree of dust removal And additional air humidification. Dirty air passes through the filter with water and is immediately mixed with it due to the high pressure of the air supply. Water absorbs dust particles, the smallest dust particles are retained by additional filters, and at the output we get clean and humidified air.

Such vacuum cleaners ideal for allergy sufferers, and you won’t have to breathe dust when emptying the container - you just need to pour the contaminated water down the drain, and this is not difficult. The cleaning efficiency of this vacuum cleaner is the highest.. True, cleanse the container will be needed after each cleaning, which can be classified as a disadvantage, because in all other types of vacuum cleaners the container is shaken out (or changed) as it is filled. Another disadvantage of vacuum cleaners with an aqua filter is higher weight and larger dimensions compared to models with other types of dust collectors.

Washing vacuum cleaners

All vacuum cleaners According to the type of cleaning, they are divided into two types:

  • for dry cleaning;
  • for wet cleaning.

Vacuum cleaners with bags, containers and an aqua filter belong to the dry type of cleaning. Vacuum cleaners with a wet cleaning function are a separate type of device that can carry out both regular dry and wet cleaning. The efficiency of washing vacuum cleaners is much higher than regular dry ones. They are able to cope with different types of contaminants, collecting dust and dirt that cannot be sucked in with conventional vacuum cleaners.

Washing devices do an excellent job of cleaning carpet surfaces, tiles, stone, and they can even wash glass until it shines. One cleaning per week with such a vacuum cleaner can be compared in effectiveness to cleaning with a regular vacuum cleaner every other day. We can talk about the advantages of washing models of vacuum cleaners for a very long time - they cope with the task of cleaning really well.

Among the minuses Such devices have a high price, which is 2-3 times higher than the cost of conventional models with a dry cleaning method. Moreover, wet cleaning is not suitable for all types of surfaces. For example, natural carpets and parquet will only suffer from such cleaning. The weight of washing vacuum cleaners is significant, and it will be extremely difficult for a fragile woman to carry out cleaning with its help. Moreover, after each cleaning you will need to disassemble and dry the vacuum cleaner, and such models have significant electricity consumption, and this does not count the need to constantly add a special detergent. Such an impressive list of disadvantages, according to many users, outweighs the advantages of washing vacuum cleaners, so for now they are inferior in popularity to conventional models.

Vacuum cleaner filters

The second important factor to consider before purchasing a vacuum cleaner for your home is type and number of filters, because it is this parameter that determines what kind of air will come out of the vacuum cleaner, and therefore how healthy the microclimate in the apartment will be.

Manufacturers may claim that their vacuum cleaner uses an air purification system that includes 7 and even 10-12 filters, but all this is nothing more than a marketing ploy, after all Three levels of cleaning are key, which are available in all models:

Fine filters play a special role, Therefore, when choosing a vacuum cleaner, you should pay maximum attention to them.

Fine filters are most often presented one of the following options:

  • microfilters of electrostatic type;
  • HEPA filters;
  • S-filters.

Let's look at each of them in more detail.

Electrostatic microfilters- the cheapest option, which is still used in budget models of vacuum cleaners. Such filters are made on a foam rubber, cellulose or pressed microfiber base. They trap dirt particles while allowing air to pass freely. The degree of purification is quite decent, but still inferior to more modern HEPA and S-filters. In addition, such filters will need to be changed or washed from time to time.

HEPA-filters used today in the vast majority of vacuum cleaners, and improved options are constantly appearing with an increasingly higher degree of purification. This filter resembles an accordion, is made of fiber material, the holes in it are from 0.3 to 0.65 microns in diameter, so they can trap even the smallest dust particles.

HEPA filter can be disposable and made from paper or fiberglass. In this case, you will sometimes have to replace used filters with new ones, and the manufacturer indicates the frequency of such replacements for each model and different operating conditions. Permanent filters are made of fluoroplastic and require only periodic washing. If you comply with this requirement, the filter can be used for as long as a vacuum cleaner.

HEPA filter efficiency defined by European standardEN 1822 . In the description of a specific vacuum cleaner model, you can see the following designations: HEPA H10 orHEPA H 11 , HEPA H 12, etc. A number from 10 to 16 indicates the degree of air purification, and the larger it is, the better. Yes, filters HEPA H10 traps up to 85% of dust particles, and filters HEPA H13 – already 99.95%. If you don’t know which vacuum cleaner to choose for a home where an allergy sufferer lives, then it is better to opt for HEPA H 13 filters, which trap both plant pollen and tobacco smoke. By the way, you can already find HEPA H 14 on sale with a purification degree of 99.995% and even more efficient filters.

S-filters also provide a high degree of purification - 99.97%. Can be replaceable or reusable. They will have to be replaced or cleaned once a year.

Once again, it is worth noting that the three degrees of filtration described are basic and provide excellent air purification. In order to increase sales, manufacturers offer vacuum cleaners with dozens of cleaning levels: you will spend more money on the purchase, but the air coming out will be the same.

Vacuum cleaner design type

All vacuum cleaners According to the type of construction, they are divided into the following main types:

  • balloon;
  • vertical;
  • mop-type vacuum cleaners;
  • vacuum cleaners, which represent a separate group of devices.

Each of these vacuum cleaner options has its own advantages and disadvantages, which make the model more preferable for use in specific conditions. So which vacuum cleaner is better to choose? Let's look at the characteristics of each option.

Cylinder vacuum cleaners

We received canister vacuum cleaners in our apartments and houses greatest distribution. Their design is familiar to all of us and consists of a housing with a motor and a dust collector, a pipe and a brush. The dust collector can be anything; the kit usually includes several brushes for cleaning different types of surfaces.

By size, such vacuum cleaners are divided into:

Upright vacuum cleaners

Such vacuum cleaners have become widespread in the USA and some European countries, but not here. Their main advantages include high cleaning efficiency and the ability to clean large areas, which is why they are often used in offices and hotels. On the other hand, they are heavy, bulky and noisy.

Mop type vacuum cleaners

Such vacuum cleaners boast compact sizes and light weight, so they are ideally suited for small apartments: they are easy to store, and the power will be enough for regular cleaning of a small room. Moreover, during operation they produce minimal noise.

Robot vacuum cleaners

Such devices are becoming increasingly widespread, since they actually do all the cleaning without human help, and are not much more expensive than conventional vacuum cleaners. Modern models cope with cleaning any surfaces and can bypass all obstacles. This vacuum cleaner can be used as a stand-alone cleaning tool, but many people prefer to run it during the week to maintain cleanliness between thorough “manual” cleanings.

Vacuum cleaner power

All those who are wondering how to choose a vacuum cleaner for an apartment are always interested in the power of the device. It is worth paying attention not only to power consumption, but also to suction power, Moreover, the second parameter is more important, since it directly indicates how effective this or that model is in cleaning.

It is immediately worth noting that The suction power of a vacuum cleaner is a variable parameter, and it depends on the degree of filling of the dust collector (for vacuum cleaners with bags), on the position of the hose and the main nozzle of some other factors. Moreover, there is still no universal standard for measuring the suction power of a vacuum cleaner, so manufacturers, as a rule, indicate its maximum value.

Suction power is indicated in watts (W), but increasingly you can find another unit of measurement - aerwatts (aW), which is virtually identical to watts. There is no direct relationship between power consumption and suction power, those. A vacuum cleaner with a higher power consumption may not necessarily be more effective at cleaning. You need to choose the model that, with the required suction power, has less power consumption. In the description of vacuum cleaners, power consumption and suction power are indicated as a fraction - 1500/500, for example. Among the two vacuum cleaners 1700/400 and 1500/450, the second one will be more effective, and it is worth choosing.

Now the question is different - What power consumption will be enough to clean the room? It all depends on the features of the home interior. Here are the data you can rely on when choosing the required suction power:

  • 350 aW– power suitable for cleaning smooth surfaces, incl. linoleum, laminate, parquet, tiles, etc.;
  • 400-450 aW– power sufficient for cleaning long-pile carpets;
  • 550 aW sufficient for wet cleaning;
  • 650 aW sufficient for deep cleaning of upholstered furniture;
  • vacuum cleaners with a power of 800 aW or more used for professional cleaning.

From all this it follows that for most people a vacuum cleaner with a suction power of 300-400 aW is suitable; it will be enough to work with a turbo brush. This is one of the additional attachments, which will be discussed later.

Vacuum cleaner attachments

To ensure perfect cleanliness in all corners of the house, it is better to use various attachments, thanks to which the vacuum cleaner becomes a truly multifunctional device. Most often, a vacuum cleaner is equipped with 3-5 attachments:

Suction pipe

An important element of a vacuum cleaner is the suction pipe. Here you need to pay attention to the material of its execution. There are only two options:

  • metal pipe;
  • plastic pipe.

Which material is better? This is a subject of eternal debate, and there is no clear answer. Of course, a metal pipe seems more durable and reliable, and many experts recommend this option. On the other hand, high-quality and durable plastic, which is used to make pipes for modern vacuum cleaners, will serve faithfully for quite a long time, while being much lighter.

The suction pipe can be solid or dismountable. Telescopic sliding pipes are the most convenient and practical option: when cleaning, you can reach them anywhere and store them conveniently.

Control system

When it comes to controlling a vacuum cleaner, we mean the way it turns on/off and selects power. There are only two fundamentally different options here:

  • mechanical control done using buttons and sliders. Power is controlled by rotators or slide switches. Everything is simple and clear, but power adjustment occurs according to clearly fixed values, which is not always convenient;
  • electronic control allows you to more accurately regulate the power level depending on the surface being treated. Such vacuum cleaners are usually equipped with a small display that displays information about the power level, as well as the need to replace filters, fill the dust container, or the need to recharge if it is a cordless vacuum cleaner.

Robot vacuum cleaners are controlled using a remote control or even through a special application for a smartphone. The cheapest vacuum cleaners do not have a switch for adjusting the power at all, and if necessary, you can adjust it using a damper - the old fashioned way.

Where should the controls be located? The most common option is on the body of the vacuum cleaner. A more convenient option is to locate the controls on the suction pipe, but such models are more expensive.

Vacuum cleaner noise level

Too much noise when vacuuming can cause headaches, so users try to choose a device that is as quiet as possible. In 2002, all major vacuum cleaner manufacturers signed a convention according to which the noise level when vacuuming at maximum power should not exceed 80 dB.

One of the indicators of the ease of use of a vacuum cleaner is the area that can be cleaned without switching the device from one outlet to another. The operating radius is defined as the total length of the wire and the suction pipe. If this figure is 9 m, then it will be possible to clean a 1-2-room apartment without using extension cords or changing sockets.

When choosing a vacuum cleaner, you should take into account its weight, and, consequently, how convenient it will be for cleaning. For the most fragile ones, it is better to choose compact vacuum cleaners weighing 3-4 kg, but you will have to clean the container from dust or change it more often. The weight of a full-size vacuum cleaner can reach 5-6 kg, and a vacuum cleaner with an aqua filter – 7-8 kg.

What else to consider when choosing?

To choose a good vacuum cleaner, when purchasing, you should pay attention to the following details:

The best vacuum cleaner manufacturers

Another important factor that should be taken into account by all those who are wondering how to choose a vacuum cleaner for an apartment is the name of the manufacturer. The brand speaks volumes, because companies have been earning a name for themselves for a very long time and are unlikely to produce low-quality equipment in pursuit of quick profits.

The best vacuum cleaner manufacturers today:

We hope our tips helped you understand the issue of choosing a vacuum cleaner.

In the store, all vacuum cleaners seem about the same - body, hose, pipe and brush. But meanwhile, the difference between them is very significant.

The price and design of vacuum cleaners vary. How to navigate the variety offered by household appliance manufacturers and choose the appropriate vacuum cleaner model?

Choosing a vacuum cleaner to bring comfort to your home

Every home needs quality cleaning. To perform this task you need good technique. Choosing a good vacuum cleaner is actually not easy. It is clear that relying solely on the design and price of equipment is wrong. The variety of models is dizzying, and the lack of knowledge about what technical properties a good vacuum cleaner should have does not contribute to the right choice either.

Before choosing a vacuum cleaner, pay attention to where it collects dust. Today there are three types of dust collectors - bags, containers and water filters.

Type of dust collector: bag, container or aqua filter?

Bag- the most common and inexpensive type of dust collector. They are either reusable, made from textiles, or disposable, made from paper. Despite its prevalence, this is not the best option. Fabric bags trap large dust particles, but easily let small ones through. In addition, emptying and washing such a dust collector is not the most pleasant and hygienic task. Disposable paper bags are capable of trapping particles down to 3 microns in size and do not require cleaning. But you will have to constantly buy more of them.

In addition, all dust collectors of this type have one significant drawback - if they are not changed for a long time, harmful bacteria and mites begin to breed in the dust, for which darkness and an abundance of dirt are an ideal habitat.

Dust container does not require replacement. It only needs to be thoroughly rinsed and dried after filling. Vacuum cleaners with a container are noticeably more expensive than similar models with dust collectors. Their other disadvantage is the high noise level. When the vacuum cleaner operates, the container turns into a resonator. Therefore, cleaning with the help of such models of vacuum cleaners certainly cannot be called quiet.

Vacuum cleaner with water filter- a real machine for creating a good microclimate. The sucked air is washed with water, and the wet dust settles in a special container. The advantages of such vacuum cleaners include efficiency, while the disadvantages include relatively high cost.

Filtration: why do we need additional filters?

As the air passes through the vacuum cleaner, it comes out and returns to the room. And it is very important that it is clean, since microscopic particles of dirt sprayed into the air are much more dangerous than dust lying in the corners. Inhalation of polluted air leads to irritation of mucous membranes and allergies.

Modern vacuum cleaners must capture at least 99% of dust. Therefore, a high-quality vacuum cleaner should have several filters for the exhaust air. It would be good if the selected model is equipped with a HEPA filter. It captures the smallest fragments of dust, bacteria and allergens. And vacuum cleaners with a water filter provide the best cleaning - they capture more than 99.99% of dust.

Power: is more better?

When choosing a vacuum cleaner, many people focus on power. Indeed, it seems that the 1800W vacuum cleaner is much better than its 1400W counterpart. But what actually determines power? Let's start with the fact that there is power consumption (this is what is most often indicated on the body) and suction power. Power consumption determines the dimensions, power consumption and noise level. The more powerful the vacuum cleaner, the larger and “louder” it is.

But power consumption has little effect on the quality of cleaning. The suction power is much more important. However, there are some subtleties here too. If you don’t have children or Persian cats, and the floor is covered with laminate, linoleum or carpet, a vacuum cleaner with a suction power of 300 W will do an excellent job of cleaning up the mess. In this case, buying a powerful vacuum cleaner will only be a waste of money and energy during its operation.

A vacuum cleaner with a suction power of more than 300 W will be useful for owners of long-pile carpets and those who often have to clean up after children and shedding pets. And vacuum cleaners with suction power less than 260 W are not worth even looking at.

Please keep in mind that as the dust container fills up, the suction power decreases. But this does not apply to vacuum cleaners with an aqua filter. In them, the suction power does not depend in any way on the contamination of the water and remains constant throughout the entire cleaning process.

Type of cleaning: wet or dry?

When choosing a vacuum cleaner for your home, think about what type of cleaning you need. The wet cleaning function significantly increases the cost of the device, but in fact, not everyone needs it. Washing vacuum cleaners are much larger than ordinary ones, and owners of small apartments, where every square meter is valuable, are better off opting for a regular vacuum cleaner. A washing vacuum cleaner will not be useful for those whose floors are covered with linoleum or other smooth material.

Allergy sufferers cannot do without wet cleaning - the smallest dust that ordinary vacuum cleaners raise can lead to an asthma attack. However, for them, the ideal option would be to choose a vacuum cleaner with an aqua filter, which cleans not only the floor, but also the air. Families with small children need a truly washing vacuum cleaner. And also for those who love carpets and floor coverings with thick pile. No ordinary vacuum cleaner can clean a carpet, especially a light-colored one, as well as a washing one. Moreover, how can you find out from video, some models of washing vacuum cleaners are capable of performing the functions of air humidification and deodorization.

The more expensive the vacuum cleaner, the more reliable and functional it is. The cheapest models do not last long - most often small parts break, the plastic on the pipe and brushes crack, the hose breaks, and less often the motor burns out. Their service life is short, and the warranty period is even shorter. If such a vacuum cleaner breaks down, it is easier to throw it away than to repair it. Expensive vacuum cleaners can last for decades, and the warranty period for elite models can reach 10 years. So, in the end, it is much more profitable to choose a high-quality vacuum cleaner once and forget about dust and allergens for many years.

More and more technology is appearing in the home to make life easier. Few people imagine life without a vacuum cleaner. These are the household appliances that help you quickly clean up your home. But choosing a vacuum cleaner is not so easy - there are many types and varieties, prices - from quite reasonable to very impressive. And about all models (or almost) manufacturers tell miracles.

First, let's talk about the technical parameters. You need to choose a model with an eye on them - this is the key to fast and high-quality cleaning.

Appearance is the last thing you need to pay attention to

Power consumption and suction - what's the difference?

A strange thing is that the power consumed by the vacuum cleaner is often written in large numbers on the body. Although this figure only shows the “gluttony” of the device. At the same time, an important characteristic that reflects efficiency during cleaning - suction power - is written in small numbers or is generally found only in the passport.

This characteristic can be expressed in AetoWatts or Watts. The first unit of measurement is taken from the English system of measures and is not accepted in other countries. But some manufacturers use it. In principle, it doesn’t matter whether it’s in Watts or AeroWatts. The same parameter is displayed and its values are comparable.

The power consumed by a vacuum cleaner and the suction power are different quantities.

To choose a vacuum cleaner that will quickly and efficiently collect all dust and debris, it is necessary that the suction power be 300-400 W. This may cause problems with carpet cleaning. Especially if you have pets - dogs, cats. In this case, it will be better if the suction power of the vacuum cleaner is 410-500 W or even higher. These are the maximum values for household vacuum cleaners.

But it is advisable to choose a vacuum cleaner for cleaning pet hair from the semi-professional category. Professional ones are too expensive for private use, but semi-professional models can be very useful in a private home. Especially with a large area and the presence of our smaller brothers. They deal with contaminants faster and absorb better. In this group, suction power of 700-800 W is not uncommon. With approximately these indicators, a vacuum cleaner is needed to collect animal hair.

When choosing a vacuum cleaner based on suction power, you must also remember that the peak and nominal power may be indicated. The peak develops at the start and after 5-7 minutes goes into the nominal, which is 5-15% lower. If both of these numbers are indicated in your passport, it is better if the difference between them is small - 5-7% - this is an ideal case.

Noise level

High noise levels are not only unpleasant, but can even harm your health. For the average person, discomfort appears at noise levels of 70-75 dB. So it is advisable to choose equipment with a lower rating. There are quiet vacuum cleaners that make only 54-56 dB of noise, and there are also those that produce sounds with a power of 85 dB or even more.

The optimal choice of vacuum cleaner in terms of noise level is around 70 dB. It “sounds” at approximately the same level as human speech. With a lower indicator, this is, of course, good, but they cost much more. Units with high performance - 80 dB and above - can only be used in a private home. Few neighbors in an apartment building will be happy with such equipment. Unless you will be cleaning rarely and only at “permitted times” (not at night or during “quiet hours”). And it's not a fact that you won't need special noise-isolating headphones, since loud sound can cause pain.

We must also remember that there is no single standard by which the noise level of a vacuum cleaner is measured. There is only the Brussels Convention, which requires measurements to be taken when operating at maximum power. This document was signed by some companies: LG; Electrolux; Miele; Bosch; Rowenta; Pro-Aqua; Philips. This is how they make measurements. We can't vouch for other manufacturers.

Types of dust collectors: bag or container

To make choosing a vacuum cleaner easier, you need to clearly imagine how the air purification process actually occurs. It is drawn into the inlet, passes through the dust collector, where the largest debris settles. Then it goes to the first filter, where large particles remain. The last stage is a fine filter. Almost all modern vacuum cleaners operate using this algorithm. But there are those that do not have a final stage - a fine filter. These are usually the most budget models.

One of the most difficult stages is deciding which type of vacuum cleaner suits you most. First, let's look at dust collectors. They come in two types - bags and containers. Both are imperfect.

Bags

Bags for vacuum cleaners are made of textiles or paper. Paper ones are disposable. filled up - threw it away. Reusable textile ones are made from non-woven fabric or fiberglass. They can be emptied, washed, and used several times.

Which is better - disposable or reusable? The question is not easy. Disposable ones are used up faster, which is why it is worth having some supply. But they allow you to do without dirty work. They pulled out the full one, threw it away, installed a new one. Quickly, without dirt and hassle.

Dust bags for a vacuum cleaner can be paper - disposable, or fabric - reusable

The frequency of replacement depends on many factors - the size of the area being cleaned, the type of room. There is more garbage in the house - rubbish is carried from the street, so you have to change the bags more often. In an apartment, replacement is a rare occurrence, since most of the garbage remains on the stairs, in the entrance, etc. And the dust is compressed, the bag can be used for six months or even more.

The disadvantage of this type of dust collectors is that you have to buy bags. They do not always cost little and this should be kept in mind when choosing a model. Another trouble is that sometimes it’s hard to find the right size. Especially if the model is no longer new.

Reusable bags can last a long time. They have little wear, but there are reasons why they are periodically replaced. Vacuum cleaners with such a bag are predecessors of container dust collectors, with their own disadvantages:

There is one more point: in a washed bag, a certain amount of microparticles still remains between the fibers. Each time this worsens its “throughput”, the suction power gradually decreases. And one more thing: the accumulation of dust in the fabric of the bag can negatively affect the condition of allergy sufferers. As you can see, choosing a vacuum cleaner is not easy...

Containers

Dust collection container (plastic container). This container lasts as long as the vacuum cleaner itself. But the debris must be periodically removed, the container washed and dried. The frequency of processing depends on the model and type of filtration. During these actions, the container may be damaged. Yes, it is made of durable plastic, but still... And one more thing: before purchasing, carefully read the care instructions. Some manufacturers have nuances - to avoid unpleasant surprises, it is advisable to know everything.

Containers can be purchased separately...if you find them

It is impossible to say unequivocally which type of dust collector is better. Some people are more comfortable with a bag, while others find it easier with a plastic container. It’s a pity that you can only determine for sure by testing both systems. Still, many people believe that it is better to choose a vacuum cleaner with a container.

First stage of cleaning

After the dust collector, the air drawn in by the vacuum cleaner goes to post-treatment, where the smallest dust particles are retained. The quality of purification of not only the floor, but also the air in the room depends on the effectiveness of this system. As a rule, it consists of two stages: sedimentation of large debris and additional purification on fine filters.

Both the first and second stages of purification are different. It is in the quality and design of these filters that manufacturers compete. The quality of air purification depends on their effectiveness. Let's look at the first stage of cleaning first. At this stage, the largest particles of contaminants are deposited. The better the cleaning at this stage, the less the thin filters of the next stage will clog.

Vacuum cleaners with bag

These are the cheapest vacuum cleaners today, but their degree of air purification is not very high. The air flow with dust enters the bag through the suction hose. This is where large debris and most of the dust are retained and deposited. Partially purified air passes through filters and is then released outside.

Need a cheap vacuum cleaner - look for one with a bag

The system is very simple, but compared to modern developments, it is not very effective. In addition to having to change or empty the bags frequently, the filters need to be changed. They quickly become clogged, since the air comes out of the bag with a large number of impurities. As a result, it turns out that to maintain normal operation, a fairly substantial amount is spent on consumables. If you decide to choose a vacuum cleaner of this type, count the costs of bags and filters (we’ll talk about them below, but they also need to be changed). Perhaps you will change your mind.

Cyclonic

If you want to choose a bagless vacuum cleaner for dry cleaning, consider cyclone vacuum cleaners. They always come with a plastic dust container. The air enters the container, where it swirls into a vortex flow. In this case, pollution, as heavier substances, accumulates on the periphery. In the middle, the air turns out to be relatively clean. It is fed to the second stage of purification.

Advantages of a cyclone vacuum cleaner:

  • does not require the purchase of consumables (bags);
  • is relatively inexpensive.

Disadvantages of a cyclone vacuum cleaner:

If you want to choose a bagless vacuum cleaner for dry cleaning and want it to be inexpensive, this is a good option. But remember that you will have to empty the dust container often, otherwise it will not “pull” air and dirt well. The second point is the need to regularly replace second-stage filters.

Aquafilter

As you know, dust and all contaminants settle well in water. This is what the operation of vacuum cleaners with aqua filters is based on. In them, polluted air passes through water and comes out almost clean. The degree of purification depends on the type of aquafilter. The first to appear on the market was a bubbler or hookah type aqua filter. This is what many people think about when they talk about aqua filters. Later, separator models appeared. This is also a vacuum cleaner with a water filter, but of a different type. Let's see what the difference is.

Hookah type water filter

In a hookah-type aquafilter, contaminated air is supplied to a chamber with water. Contaminants settle in the water, air bubbles rise up and collect under the roof of the chamber. There is still dust in this air, but the amount is much less. The purification level can reach 99%. If you use a vacuum cleaner with a water filter immediately after dry cleaning, you will be able to notice the difference - the water will become dirty very quickly. These vacuum cleaners actually clean the air better. But she is also imperfect.

This system has disadvantages. Some air bubbles “capture” dust particles with them. So the cleansing is not complete. Another drawback is that there is not much water in the container (there must be room to collect purified air) and it has to be changed frequently. Sometimes even several times during cleaning. To be able to monitor its condition, the container is often made transparent and at least part of it is visible.

Another disadvantage is that the water container has to be washed and dried after each cleaning. Otherwise, bacteria will breed in it. If you want to choose a vacuum cleaner with an aqua filter, you will have to wash it regularly.

Design of separator vacuum cleaners

This type of vacuum cleaner also uses a water filter, but it works differently. In fact, the air purification separator system combines two technologies - a cyclone and a conventional water filter. The air enters the chamber, at the bottom of which there is water. Using a separator, the water is spun until a funnel is formed. Separator rotation speed - 20000-32000 rpm. The liquid moves somewhat slower, but also at high speed. The moving wall of water traps air, depositing contaminants.

Since the speed of movement in the cleaning chamber is high, the air undergoes similar cleaning several times, so that at the outlet it contains very little dust. Manufacturers claim that the degree of purification reaches 99.997%.

Disadvantage of separator vacuum cleaners:

  • expensive (the most expensive group);
  • large in size, difficult to move, difficult to find a place;
  • it needs to be washed, and it is advisable to have a long hose, otherwise you will have to push it into the bath, and this is not easy.

If you need to get rid of not only debris, but also the smallest dust particles, you can’t find a better solution today than a separating vacuum cleaner. If funds allow, we recommend choosing a vacuum cleaner in this category. It is good at least because it does not have fine filters. He simply doesn't need them. At least that's what the manufacturers say.

Coarse and fine filters

There are two filters in modern vacuum cleaners: one in front of the motor, the second at the outlet. The one in front of the motor traps larger particles and is called a coarse filter. The second one - with a smaller cell - traps the remaining small contaminants. It is called a fine filter. There are three types.

Microfilter

The motor microfilter is made in the form of a flat cassette in which the filter material is clamped. Foam rubber or pressed microfiber is inserted inside. The filter element is light - white or light blue. This is done so that you can control the degree of filter contamination. If it has acquired a light gray tint, it will need to be replaced after some time. When it turns completely gray, it’s time to change it. Usually the replacement period is once every 3-4 months.

While the filter is “fresh” it cleans well. As the pores become clogged with dust, cleansing decreases. The replacement time can also be determined by the smell: when the filter is clogged, a lot of dust gets on the motor. Accordingly, during operation there is a smell of burning dust.

Carbon filters

Externally, this filter looks like a container divided into cells filled with activated carbon. They put it on the last, often additional, stage of purification. It only captures odors, not dust. Effective for 2-3 months, after which it requires replacement.

Carbon filter - an additional stage for purifying the air from odors

When purchasing, make sure that it is sealed in a plastic bag. If the bag is deflated, this filter will not work. The packaging must be sealed.

HEPA filters

They come in different shapes - for different models of vacuum cleaners. They can be distinguished by their appearance - they resemble an accordion made of filter material inserted into a plastic housing. Characterized by high filtering capacity:

  • H 10 retains up to 85% of dust;
  • N 11 – up to 95%;
  • H 12 – up to 99.5%;
  • H 13 – up to 99.995%.

Tests were carried out on new filters. Like others, their filtering capacity decreases as they become dirty. In theory, you can buy a HEPA filter with any cleaning ability - this is at the discretion of the owner of the vacuum cleaner. But not all modifications have the required form, so they usually buy “what is available.”

There are disposable and reusable HEPA filters. Disposable ones are made of paper with glass fibers. Retains particles down to 0.3 microns. But they are expensive and have to be changed often. It’s better - after using the vacuum cleaner 2-3 times, in reality - as it turns out, but it is advisable to follow the recommendations in the operating instructions.

Reusable HEPA filters are made of fluoroplastic. They can be washed periodically. Manufacturers say that such a filter will last up to 3-6 months, but after each use it must be washed and dried. Otherwise, bacteria will multiply in it.

Which filter is better?

Despite all the shortcomings, HEPA filters are the best in terms of cleaning ability. But their cost, problems with finding suitable sizes/shapes/parameters can bring many unpleasant moments.

How to choose a vacuum cleaner for an apartment or home

As has already been said, for a private home it is advisable to choose a vacuum cleaner with significant suction power (at least not lower than 500 aW). But you also need to pay attention to the volume of the dust bag/container - there is usually more garbage than in apartments. But you choose the cleaning system and functions based on your own ideas and desires.

For dry cleaning or washing

The first thing you need to decide is whether you need a vacuum cleaner for dry cleaning or for wet cleaning. In general, it is better to have both, since they are not interchangeable. For example, a small bagged vacuum cleaner is ideal for daily cleaning. It is advisable to find it in a small case, with a set of various attachments. It will do an excellent job of cleaning the car, collecting debris after minor repairs, drilling holes, scattered cereals, etc. But only a vacuum cleaner with an aqua filter can cope with the task of de-dusting an apartment or house. They can be used to clean after a bagged vacuum cleaner - the filters will last longer. By the way, they usually contain HEPA.

Vacuum cleaners with a wet cleaning function can be of three types:

  • Regular (hookah) aqua filter.
  • Separator.
  • Steam.

They all have two containers. The first contains clean water, which is sprayed onto the floor. Collected by the brush, it enters the second tank - for waste water. The disadvantages of such systems are bulkiness, high price, and the need for cleaning after each use.

If there are animals in the house - a turbo brush

Collecting dog or cat hair from fleecy surfaces is also a pleasure. Vacuum cleaner manufacturers have developed special turbo brushes. This is a nozzle, inside of which there is a roller with multi-directional bristles. The roller spins, picking up wool, hair, threads. Everything that is so difficult to assemble with ordinary attachments. Each company has its own direction and location of the bristles.

The turbo brush can be mechanical or electric. The mechanical one rotates in the air flow. The electric one is driven by a built-in motor. The second option is more reliable, but also more expensive. They are also wide - for treating floors and floor coverings, and narrow - for cleaning furniture.

Turbo brushes - for vacuuming animal hair

The type of vacuum cleaner for cleaning animal hair is mainly a cyclone. Many of them are equipped with turbo brushes or you can buy them. There are some exceptions:

  • Bag Miele S 6220 Cat&Dog and some Bork models.
  • Vacuum cleaner with water filter Thomas Cat&Dog XT.

In a good brush, the roller can be easily removed and replaced - it must be cleaned regularly. Many of them have a deep groove so that the wound wool can be cut with scissors. During the cleaning process, it clumps into something similar to felt. And it can be very difficult to remove.

Wireless models

If you want to choose a small and powerful vacuum cleaner, look at cordless models. They run on batteries, which is why they are also called rechargeable. They have an unusual shape. The case, filters, dust collector - all this is held in the hand. There is only a brush on the floor. It is connected to the body by a tube, but this tube most often has a movable joint - to increase mobility and maneuverability and make it easier to control the unit.

Cordless vacuum cleaners - if you need a compact and powerful one

The cordless vacuum cleaner comes complete with a charger. It is also a storage space or, as they say, a packing station.
